What Is the Shift Position Sensor?
The Ferrari 360 F1 gearbox actuator uses a shift position sensor to detect the current gear position.
Also known as the coupling sensor or selection sensor, it carries part number 181325 (182156), and two units are installed in the actuator.
What Happens When It Fails? Symptoms and Error Codes
When the sensor fails, the transmission control unit loses the ability to accurately detect gear position. Common symptoms include:
- Gear stuck — unable to shift
- Warning light illuminated
- Unable to exit neutral
- Vehicle becomes undriveable
Diagnostic tools will typically return error codes P1741 and P1742. If these codes are present, a faulty shift position sensor is the most likely cause.
Important Note ①: Position Learning (Calibration) Required After Replacement
Simply replacing the sensor is not sufficient for proper operation.
After replacement, gear position learning (calibration) must be performed using a diagnostic tool.
Skipping this step will result in the error persisting even after the new sensor is installed.
Important Note ②: Inspect the Sensor Shaft for Damage
A common issue associated with this repair is damage to the sensor shaft.
If the shaft is broken, the sensor cannot detect actuator movement — meaning the error may not be resolved even after installing a new sensor.
