Throttle Position Sensor (Potentiometer) for Ferrari 360 / F430 — P/N 170038

Starting with the 360 model, Ferrari completely overhauled its throttle system. The mechanical wire-and-rod throttle used through the F355 was replaced by an electronic throttle control system — commonly known as Drive-by-Wire — which converts accelerator pedal input into electronic signals. This brought a dramatic improvement in control precision and throttle response.

In earlier models, the throttle position sensor was just one component in the fuel injection system. From the 360 onward, it became the central part responsible for controlling the throttle itself electronically.

As a result, if this sensor fails, the accelerator may become completely unresponsive in the worst case — effectively rendering the car undrivable. Regular inspection and prompt replacement at the first sign of trouble are strongly recommended.

Symptoms of Failure

When the throttle position sensor fails, the following symptoms are commonly observed:

· Poor throttle pedal response The most common early symptom. The internal resistor contacts have worn down, causing poor electrical contact.

· Throttle drop-out When the pedal is pressed to a certain point, the throttle suddenly cuts out as if the accelerator is released. This occurs when partial contact loss interrupts the signal.

· No throttle response at all The most severe condition. The signal is completely lost due to contact deterioration, or the electrical signal has degraded to noise only, rendering the sensor non-functional.

When to Replace

The throttle position sensor is a wear item. The internal potentiometer wears down with use. If any of the symptoms above appear, we recommend replacing it promptly.

One important note: in many cases, no check engine light will illuminate and no error codes will be detected. Diagnosing the fault therefore requires measuring resistance values with a dedicated diagnostic tester.

Even mild early-stage symptoms can progress to complete loss of throttle response if left unaddressed. If you notice any sluggishness in throttle response, have your vehicle inspected at a specialist shop as soon as possible.
