A Common Ferrari and Maserati Problem: Fuel Leaks from the Fuel Pump
Fuel pump leaks are a common issue on the Ferrari 360, 430, 599, and 612, as well as the Maserati 4200 and GranSport, which use the same type of fuel pump.⠋
Fuel pump-related parts for these models are available in our online shop.
Genuine Part Numbers by Model
| Model | Previous part numbers | New part numbers | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ferrari 360 Modena (Coupe) | 199120 / 164146 | 239813 / 239814 | — |
| Ferrari 360 Spider / 430 Spider | 180477 / 195841 / 193725 / 180476 | 239811 / 239812 | — |

| Ferrari 599 / 612 / Maserati 4200 / GranSport | 181204 / 181205 | Unchanged | Part numbers unchanged; specifications revised. |
Fuel leaks are frequently reported on vehicles fitted with fuel pumps bearing these previous part numbers.
The previous part numbers have already been replaced by new ones, and it appears that some changes have been made.
The part number is stamped in very small characters and can be difficult to read. You can also identify the version by the color where the pipe connects: white indicates the previous version, while orange (yellow) indicates the new version.
Where the Fuel Leak Occurs

Many fuel leaks occur at the base of the hose connection, around the cross-shaped section shown in the top photo. This section contains a return valve. When fuel pressure in the line rises above a certain level, the valve allows fuel to flow back into the tank.
As shown in the photo of the back, a spring presses the valve against the fuel pump cap (fuel pump flange). This constant internal pressure, combined with vibration while driving, temperature cycling caused by engine heat and changes in ambient temperature, age-related deterioration, and fuel exposure, can cause cracks to form.
Some people attempt to repair the return valve themselves, but given its design, disassembling, modifying, or repairing it is dangerous. A failure in this area could lead to serious problems, so we strongly recommend replacing the unit.
Preventing and Repairing Fuel Leaks
Unfortunately, there is no preventive measure for this type of fuel leak. If symptoms occur, replacement with a new unit is the only remedy.
We also recommend replacing both sides at the same time, even if only one side has failed. If the other side is left in place, it is likely to develop a fuel leak soon due to deterioration.
We strongly recommend replacing the ring nut and O-ring that secure the pump at the same time. There have been cases of the plastic retaining nut cracking. (We sell these together with the fuel pump.)

Because this is an important safety-related component and there is also a risk of fire, replacement must be carried out by a professional repair shop.
