Symptoms: Rough Idle, Stalling, and Misfires
If your Ferrari is experiencing rough idling, engine stalling, or misfires, your first instinct might be to suspect the spark plugs or ignition coils.
However, in many cases, the real culprit is a faulty igniter.
Common symptoms:
- Unstable idling
- Hesitation or power loss during acceleration
- Engine won’t start
- Sudden engine stall
These symptoms closely resemble those caused by failing ignition coils or spark plugs, which is why the igniter is often overlooked.
Symptoms tend to appear more frequently when the engine is warm, during summer heat, or in high-humidity conditions.
What the Igniter Does — and Why It Fails
On the 348 and F355, the igniter is mounted on a bracket directly next to the ignition coil. It receives signals from the ECU and controls the ignition coil to fire the engine at precisely the right moment — making it a critical component in the ignition system.
Common causes of failure:
- Age and wear — Internal electronic components (capacitors, transistors) reach the end of their service life
- Heat damage — Degradation from engine heat and the igniter’s own operating temperature
- Moisture and humidity — Water ingress causes shorts and burns out internal circuits
- Ignition coil failure — A failing coil can send excess current through the igniter, causing damage
Vibration and poor grounding can also contribute to failure.
The igniter already operates in a harsh environment. In hot and humid climates in particular, this component is placed under especially high stress. The combined effects of heat, moisture, and vibration accelerate deterioration over time.t Japan’s hot and humid climate places particularly high stress on this component. The combined effects of heat, moisture, and vibration accelerate deterioration over time.
What to Do: Replacement
If igniter failure is suspected, repair is not feasible — replacement is the only solution.
Since a failing ignition coil can also trigger igniter damage, we strongly recommend replacing both the ignition coil and igniter at the same time.
When installing the new igniter, be sure to apply heat sink compound (thermal grease) where the igniter contacts the bracket. Without proper heat dissipation, the replacement part may fail again very quickly.

About Pricing
Genuine Ferrari parts carry a significant price premium. We offer Bosch OEM parts as a cost-effective alternative.
The only difference from the genuine part is the box — the part itself is identical.
