Phase Sensor (Camshaft Position Sensor) P/N 150866
This phase sensor is used in Ferrari models including the F355, 456 and 550.
The original Bosch sensor has now been discontinued.
As an alternative, we offer a replacement sensor from FACET, an Italian automotive parts manufacturer.
What Does the Phase Sensor (Camshaft Position Sensor) Do?
The phase sensor detects the position of the camshaft and sends a signal to the ECU.
The ECU combines this signal with the crankshaft position sensor signal to determine each cylinder’s position in the engine cycle. This information is used to control fuel injection and ignition timing. The specific control strategy differs between the Motronic 2.7 and 5.2 engine management systems.
The sensor featured here is an active Hall-effect sensor. It requires an external power supply and can produce a signal even at low engine speeds.
Because it contains electronic components such as semiconductors, it must be handled with care.
Age-Related Deterioration and Faults
The phase sensor is mounted near the camshaft or on the cam cover, where it is continually exposed to engine heat and vibration. In designs where the sensor tip extends into the cam cover, the tip is also exposed to hot engine oil and blow-by gases.
If the housing cracks or the seal deteriorates with age, oil or moisture may enter the sensor and damage its electronic circuitry.
The cable, as well as the sensor itself, deteriorates with age. Cable deterioration may make the sensor signal more susceptible to electrical interference from spark plug leads or the alternator.
The plastic connector housing can also become brittle and crumble. If the terminals are no longer held securely or their insulation is compromised, this may cause poor electrical contact or allow the terminals to touch, resulting in a short circuit.
Common Symptoms of a Faulty Phase Sensor
A faulty phase sensor may cause the following symptoms:
・Engine stalling or failure to start
・Poor throttle response or sluggish acceleration
・Misfires or incomplete combustion
・Rough running when the engine is warm
A faulty phase sensor is one possible cause of running problems that occur only when the engine is warm. However, these symptoms can also be caused by faults in other components. It is therefore important to check the sensor signal and inspect the wiring and connectors to identify the cause.
