Ignition Coil Set of 2 Ferrari 348 F355 Mondial 3.4T Bosch OEM 134386

Ignition Coil Problems on the Ferrari 348, F355 and Mondial 3.4T

Today we’re looking at the ignition coils used on the Ferrari 348, F355 and Mondial 3.4T.
Along with the ignition modules (igniters), they’re among the parts worth checking when these cars develop ignition trouble.
The V8 engine has one coil for each bank. If a coil develops a fault, ignition on that bank can be affected. The familiar “Slow Down” warning light may also appear when the car is running poorly, but the warning alone does not mean the ignition coil is at fault.

What the Ignition Coil Does, and the Harsh Conditions It Faces

To make the spark plugs fire, the ignition coil converts the battery’s 12-volt supply into the high voltage needed for ignition. That’s already a pretty demanding job… 😱

Inside the coil are windings that make this voltage conversion possible.
The part itself generates heat, and it also has to work in the scorching environment of a Ferrari engine bay.
Heat is a serious enemy of electrical components.

Common Symptoms of Ignition Coil Trouble

A faulty ignition coil can be associated with symptoms such as:

・Rough idle
・Misfires and loss of power
・Ignition trouble affecting one engine bank
・Difficulty starting, failure to start, or stalling

In some cases, the symptoms appear only once the engine is warm and subside after it cools down. That may point to a heat-related problem in the ignition system, but this symptom alone cannot identify the ignition coil as the cause.

When to Consider Replacement

If an ignition coil is deteriorating or has failed, the underlying problem is unlikely to fix itself.
An occasional fault may become more frequent, or the coil may suddenly fail altogether.
Nobody wants to keep driving around a problem only to have the car stop while they’re away from home! If you notice misfires or stalling, have the cause checked promptly. If the coil is confirmed to be faulty, we recommend replacing it.
It’s also worth checking both the coil and the ignition module. In the next section, we’ll explain why replacing them together may make sense depending on their condition.

How the Ignition Coil and Ignition Module Work Together

Another thing to keep in mind is the coil’s close relationship with the ignition module, also called the igniter. A failing ignition module can produce symptoms very similar to those of a failing coil. The module acts as a switch, controlling current to the ignition coil.

As these parts age, a fault in one may sometimes affect the other.

When an ignition module fault affects the coil
Cause: The module no longer controls current correctly, allowing current to continue flowing through the coil.
Result: The coil can overheat, potentially damaging its internal insulation.

When an ignition coil fault affects the module
Cause: An internal short circuit or another fault in the coil causes abnormal current flow.
Result: This may place an excessive load on the module that drives the coil and could damage it.

Even if you replace one of the two parts, a fault in the other could leave the symptoms unresolved or place a strain on the new part. That’s why we recommend checking both the coil and the ignition module, and considering replacement together according to their condition.
